The Battle of Atlanta in East Atlanta Walking
Tour covers the area in the very heart of the East Atlanta Village
where Federal forces massed their troops on July 22, 1864, looking
for an opportunity to attack the sturdy Atlanta defensive perimeter.
When they were surprised by a Confederate counter-attack from
the south, the fighting left 12,000 dead from both sides in the
battle that sealed the fate of Atlanta. The thriving Village
streets and Brownwood Park (named after Civil War Governor Joseph
Emerson Brown) are a sharp contrast to events of that bloody
July day in 1864.
