Enjoy a video tour, a walking tour and a home tour of this Westside Atlanta neighborhood. Served by the Southern Railroad and a streetcar line, in 1895 the Whittier Cotton Mills and village nestled in a valley near the Chattahoochee River. Villagers enjoyed shops, a school, church, post office and golf course. By 1971 the mill had closed and in the next decades arsonists and salvagers took their toll. In the late 1980s neighbors and local preservationists organized to save two of the mill structures, now known as Park Tower and Carpenter’s Shed. The mill property became a park in the 1990s and is the center of village life today, featuring a sweeping lawn, trees planted by residents, preserved ruins, a playground and bocce court, paths and picnic areas. The community of just over 125 homes achieved city Historic District status in 1994.
