Sardis United Methodist Church and Cemetery Presentation and Tour
Sunday March, 14 2010 1:00 PM

Enjoy a presentation and tour of the third oldest Methodist church in Georgia and the oldest in Atlanta, with self-guided tours of the cemetery. Some accounts say that services have been conducted on the present church site since 1812. The current property of Sardis was deeded to its Trustees by Ransom Gaines and Henry Irby in 1849. During the Battle of Atlanta, the church was spared by Sherman, who used it as a hospital and military headquarters. The current structure was built in 1926 in the Georgian style. Many well-known Atlanta families have graced the pews and headstones of Sardis Church and Cemetery, including Irby, Collier, Howell, Plaster, Cheshire, Maddox, Spruill, Donaldson, Mathieson and Jett. Light refreshments will be available.
